2025 September Mixed Doubles Tournament Results

Tournament Finals:
Winner: TBA (Jennifer and Ray)
Runner-Up: Smashers Anonymous (Raymond and Sepi)

Consolation Finals:
Winner: Ben a Smash and Not a Kar in The World (Ben and Karen)
Runner-Up: Hu Let The Balls Out (Thomas and Sue-Anne), replacing Serve-vivors (Mike and Rose Marie) due to injury

Our last tournament of the year brought together eight solid teams. There was no need to create a random draw for this contest as only eight teams entered and their desired times all lined up… I call that an Ace!
The 5:00 pm roster saw Smasher’s Anonymous( Raymond and Sepi)  on court 16 facing off against
Hu Let The Balls( Thomas and Sue-Anne). On court 15 The Serve-ivors( Mike and Rose Marie)  tested their serve-vival skills against The Pepper Popper Gang(Tim and Nicole). Both of these matches set the tone for the tournament with close contests that often went down to the wire. On court 16 there were 5 out of 7 games decided by sudden death deuces. Despite the relentless returns of Hu Let The Balls Out, their fortunes were smashed by Smasher’s Anonymous. Meanwhile on court 15, a back and forth battle royal ensued that came down to a tense final two minutes. With some fancy recovery shots by dance man Tim and nerves of steel returns from Nicole, The Pepper Popper Gang managed to overtake the clever and versatile play of Mike and Rose Marie to squeeze in the win by the final whistle.
The first semi-final on court 16 started with Smasher’s Anonymous revving up their game and overpowering the Pepper Popper Gang who, despite their valiant defensive manoeuvres, could not hold back the storm. Smashing play Smashing Anonymous! You are off to the finals!
The first consolation round semi-final could not have been more evenly matched. Still sore from their last match, The Serve-ivors went racquet to racquet against Hu Let The Balls Out. Both teams kept the ball in play with extended rallies that had viewers guessing who would be the ultimate winner. The suspense rallied on right up to the dreaded final whistle. Whew! Sorry Hu’s. Congratulations Serve-ivors… You move on the the consolation finals!
The 6:00 pm roster mixed it up with the team of Mixed Nuts( Gilda and Paul) against The Ball Blasters(Stephanie and Wayne) on court 15. On court 16 the team with the longest name, Ben a Smash and Not a Kar in The World, brought their best game against the team with the shortest name, TBA( Jennifer and Ray). The Ball Blasters, as expected, strutted their stuff against the Mixed Nuts right off the starting whistle. Mixed nuts, however, showed no interest in a bagel and surprised their opponents with clever returns from Paul and consistent ground strokes from Gilda. Not to be deterred Balls Blasters turned up the temperature of their blast furnace defeating Mixed Nuts 6-2. Ben a Smash and Not a Kar in The World cane with their balanced game of speed and consistency to top seeded TBA,  who’s initials I eventually deciphered as Tyrannical Ball Assembly. Great rallies were on display here with Ben surprising his opponents with inventive overhead smashes while not a care  in the world Karen moved all over the court with her precision covering and countering shots.  In the end TBA, hungry for the top chocolate medal, vanquished their brave opponents moving on to the semi-finals. Play resumed on court 16 with the second semi-final match that sizzled for the entire match. At times the volleys went on and on with neither team letting up. Jennifer and Ray tyrannical in their way, smartly sidestepped the Ball Blasters, who on two occasions nearly sent the ball over the fence due to the mighty force of Wayne’s smashes, to win the match with little wiggle room to spare. On court 15, Mixed Nuts warmed up from their first game took the The Serve-ivors to the mat with Paul’s bottomless bag of tricks and Gilda’s steady returns. In yet another squeaker, it was the polished fortitude of Mike and Rose Marie that proved to be the winning formula as they moved up the consolidation ladder to the finals.
Wait! Hu Let The Balls Out are back! The Serve-ivors pulled out of the consolation finals due to a muscle pull( rest and ice and we’ll see you next time) and the Hu’s graciously took their place facing off against Ben a Smash and Not a Kar in The World. This match had many gritty moments and both teams went to the limit with excellent competitive tennis. Special kudos to both teams for the high level of camaraderie shown to team mates and opponents alike. Final score: Ben a Smash and Not a Kar in The World win 6-4 over Hu Let The Balls Out.
The quest for the gold and silver final brought the two semi-finalists winners  Smashers Anonymous and TBA into the final showdown. Anticipation was high as both teams jumped into play at 7:00 pm on court 16. The quick hard spins from Ray and the impenetrable wall at the net held by Jennifer stymied the Smashing skills of Smashing Anonymous. The ever patient Sepi kept pushing back her opponents shots with well placed ground strokes while Raymond rallied to find new strategies to disrupt TBA’s onslaught. With the sun setting, time was running out on The Smasher’s Anonymous. Great action was seen by the growing gallery but all things must end and TBA won the final point ending the match 6-3 and winning the gold. Thanks to both teams for an exciting end to the tournament!

And so ends the 2025 tournaments for the year. Thanks to all the participants and to those who helped to make it happen. See you next year!

Once again, there was a tremendous interest and excitement in the sign up for the men’s and women’s team tournament. Sixteen teams with colourful and creative names were on time and ready to go when the starting whistle blew at 5:00 pm. All of the teams exhibited and maintained a consistent level of camaraderie, sportsmanship and effort amidst a high calibre of skill and competition. Mid Court Crises (Manu and Pablo) did not live up to their name as they dominated the field working their way up to finals and defeating the Net Ninjas (Raymond and Earlie) to win the Gold in the men’s division. The team of Jenn will Steph on you ( Jennifer and Stephanie) did live up to their name as they cruised and bruised up the ladder to topple The Terminetters (Dorinda and Nicole) in the final set and win the Gold in the women’s category.
Meanwhile, the consolation bracket gathered speed on courts 13 and 14. Losers can win too! In the men’s division The Tonidos (Nick and Tony) out hustled the The Hounddog Hustle (Tim and Alvise) only to be spun around and run off the court by team Spin and Sprint (Alex and Thomas) who took the coveted Bronze. Over in the women’s camp, Team Queen( Paula and Vivian) were given a sour reception by Sweet and Sour( Karen and Louisa) while The Queens of the Court got swiped off the court by The Alley Cats(Sue Anne and Rose Marie). Not a good day for Queens! A back and forth final ensued as Sweet and Sour hit just enough sweet shots to overcome the tenacious Alley Cats and win the Bronze.

Thanks to all the participants for joining in the fun!  Special thanks to Peter for his unwavering support. Thanks also to Don, Ronald and Gary for keeping the flow of notices and emails on track.

2025 June Mixed Doubles Tournament Results

The first QE tennis tournament of the year was a great success! Thirty two players made up the roster bringing their best tennis to the courts for 3 hours of fun and competitive tennis. Exceptional playmaking and teamwork crisscrossed the courts as the teams kept changing and former team mates were now on opposing sides. Several games were decided in the last seconds before the final whistle blew. The field was narrowed down to 8 players in the semi-finals. Raymond and Karen narrowly edged out Ruby and Alex while Sue-Anne and Bruce overcame the hard working team of Michael Wong and Louisa.
The Final match up of Raymond and Sue-Anne vs Bruce and Karen was an exciting 30 minutes of back and forth tennis which had those of us watching on the sidelines uncertain of which team would win. In the final 5 minutes Raymond and Sue-Anne took the lead and held it to win the tournament. Great tennis and tenacity was exhibited from both teams. Congratulations to the winners and the runners up!
Thank you to all the players for bringing your best game and good sportsmanship to the tournament and to the last minute spares who jumped in to fill up the initial roster. An extra thanks goes out to Peter for lending his experience in officiating the matches with me.

See you at the next tournament!
